The presentation of the protocol-guide against gender-based and LGBTI-phobic violence and the Toasts with Monkey Week and Faro Music take center stage at MMVV Pro Catalan Arts
Alba Pujals, Albert Cirera & Tres Tambors, Ángeles Toledano, Edna Bravo, Fillas de Cassandra, Lorena Álvarez, Salvar Doñana, Sofia Leão, and the co-produced project Verde Prato & Claraguilar are today’s premieres
The Mercat de Música Viva de Vic celebrates its second day with a program that combines rich musical proposals and intense professional activity. The 37th edition of MMVV moves forward with concerts that reaffirm the festival’s commitment to discovery and with meetings that emphasize the need to make music a fairer, more equal, and more innovative space.
Artistic program
Vic’s stages will today host a day especially marked by premieres. Ángeles Toledano will present for the first time in Catalonia her work Sangre sucia, a renewed take on flamenco that has consolidated her as one of the most promising voices of her generation. Also from the south, but with a different proposal, comes Salvar Doñana, the new project by former members of Califato 3/4, premiering in Catalonia with a powerful live performance committed to territory and collective memory.
Asturian singer-songwriter Lorena Álvarez presents in Vic her album El poder sobre una misma, where she combines folk tradition, feminist sensibility, and a personal voice that brings new perspectives to singer-songwriter music. Jazz will have a strong presence with the premiere of trombonist Alba Pujals’ new album and tour, exploring new sounds between tradition and experimentation, and with Albert Cirera & Tres Tambors, who return to the stage with Orangina, an intense and free-spirited work that opens a new chapter in their career. Also debuting at MMVV is Edna Bravo from Osona, with a project that blends traditional roots and contemporary textures.
Today’s premieres continue with Galician duo Fillas de Cassandra, presenting in Catalonia their live show based on electronics, poetry, and oral tradition with a feminist and powerful approach. Portuguese artist Sofia Leão debuts with her first album, which draws on the musical legacy of her father, Rodrigo Leão, transforming it into a delicate and sensitive proposal. The Basque-Catalan duo Verde Prato & Claraguilar will premiere a co-produced project with MMVV, born from an artistic residency, combining sound experimentation and poetic sensibility in a work halfway between voice, electronics, and avant-garde.
Thursday’s lineup is completed by the Mediterranean freshness of Barencia, exploring the musical link between Barcelona and Florence; the contemporary pop of LECOCQ; the unique and long-standing jazz of Galician trio Sumrrá; and other names such as Capitao Fausto, Sanguijuelas del Guadiana, Fidju Kitxora, Juventure, and Dalila, who will bring diverse sounds rooted in different traditions and territories to the festival.
PRO Area activities
Meanwhile, MMVV Pro Catalan Arts hosts a key day with activities focused on the challenges of the sector. The presentation of the protocol-guide for addressing gender-based and LGBTI-phobic violence in performing arts and live music, developed with the participation of industry stakeholders and promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, is one of the most anticipated moments. This practical tool aims to prevent, detect, and respond to situations of violence and is presented as a support resource for festivals, companies, and venues. Also noteworthy are the Toasts, new informal and creative meeting spaces, which today feature Faro Music and Monkey Week, two projects that exemplify music’s ability to build networks and open international pathways.
Throughout the day, accredited professionals will take part in speed meetings, pitchings, assemblies, and working sessions, such as the one dedicated to issues in hiring musicians, analyzing legislative challenges and new ways to ensure fair working conditions. The professional area will also host the meeting of the Cases de la Música, the Board of the Catalan Music Academy, and MiM’s annual assembly. In addition, international projects such as Polyglot, co-financed by the European Union, and new editions of the Projecte Link will be presented.
Making MMVV possible
The Mercat de Música Viva de Vic takes place thanks to the involvement of public institutions that promote and support it: the Vic City Council through the OFIM (Autonomous Body of Fairs and Markets) and the Generalitat de Catalunya through ICEC. It is also supported by the Spanish Ministry of Culture through INAEM and the Barcelona Provincial Council through ODA. At the same time, it is made possible thanks to the sponsorship and involvement of private companies such as Estrella Damm, main sponsor, and Vera, technology sponsor, along with a series of companies and institutions that collaborate and support MMVV.
